Okay, I’m playing catch-up. I just realized that I never got up a blog post about New Year’s Eve.
Ellie has a new friend at school. Her name is Kelly and actually they have been going to school together for a long time, but it has only been recently that they have started to connect. Kelly’s parents are lovely, and had the brave idea of inviting a large group of girls over for a New Year’s Eve sleepover.
The girls played together while the parents ate and drank, then come East Coast midnight (9pm our time), we had our little NYE countdown and party. There were hats! There were balloons! There were cookies to decorate!
Even Sparkles, who was visiting Kelly for the weekend from pre-school, got in on the fun.
I don’t often get a chance to wear a tiera so couldn’t help include this picture.
Anyway, after the party, we tried to settle them down in the basement. We got everyone in their jammies, turned the lights way down, and read lots of stories.
But, they could not settle down. For over an hour we sat in the dark trying to get the girls to lay down and go to sleep. One would start to get quiet and might even look to be falling asleep then another one would start singing or kicking or demanding attention of some kind. Over and over this happened until we gave up, and disbanded.
We brought Ellie home, got her in bed, and walked upstairs right at midnight. We flipped on the TV but missed most of the fireworks. Even so, as transition, we took our NYE photo then collapsed into bed, an exhausted heap.
When we broke up the party near midnight the girls were really disappointed, and we quickly realized that they were the most upset about not being able to play together the next day.
Not to be deterred, we reassembled the next morning for potluck breakfast (what do you have in your fridge that you can share?). We even had champagne and got to play in the hot tub. Not a bad way to spend New Year’s.
